4-Year Medical Programme Offers Malaysian, US Pathways

Perdana University has a 4-year Doctor of Medicine programme that will allow its graduates to practice as a doctor in Malaysia and the US.

The programme was developed initially in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine but it currently has University of California San Diego in an advisory role.

Unlike other medical programmes in Malaysia, it is based on the US Medical Curriculum with the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) as the exit Examinations.

Graduates will be able to opt for either Housemanship in Malaysia or join the Medical Residency Programme in the US.

In Years 1 and 2, students will be assessed in each module. These exams prepare the students for the USMLE’s Step 1, which covers basic science knowledge.

In Years 3 and 4, students will be able to participate in clinical postings at locations such as Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar Seremban, and Hospital Putrajaya.

Students’ Knowledge and Clinical Competency will be assessed at the end of clinical postings.

At the end of Year 4, students would have to clear the USMLE Step 2, which covers Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Skills.

To date, 65 students have graduated and are working in Malaysian and US hospitals.

Advancing Life Sciences Through Data Science

Data science is part of the wave of rapid change that technology has brought to the world.

Life sciences in particular have benefitted from the advances of data science.

However, there was a need for a more well-balanced approach to educating the next generation of data scientists involved in the healthcare and life science field.

Perdana University decided to take up the challenge by offering a Data Science degree programme with a customised curriculum that fulfills the 2017 Data Science Competency Checklist.

The faculty members have extensive academia and industrial experience in data science for life science, in particular Bioinformatics.

They have worked closely with partners such as Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNET), Fusionex, and BookDoc to design the curriculum and train the students.

The degree programme is recognised by the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT). MBOT is a professional body for technologists and technicians in related technology and technical fields.

Perdana University strives to provide the best resources to nurture the next generation of workforce.

Their programmes give students a solid foundation in knowledge and training that will lead them to careers that will contribute to the advancement of society in the years to come.
