Medicine Courses

If becoming a doctor is your dream but you fear the unknown, the University of Brighton will prepare you for the rocky journey. Even as early as Year 9 (secondary school).

The Brighton and Sussex Medical School, or BSMS, hosts regular Saturday sessions on medical studies. It won awards for introducing the course through activities, seminars, and lectures. Moreover, participants (a.k.a ‘BrightMedders’) can experience the life of a medical student at the end of Year 12. Sixth Form BrightMedders may also qualify for an Undergraduate programme interview at BSMS.

For Undergraduate medical students, you will learn about the human body and gain clinical experience as early as Week 2! Your first year has 20% special clinical practice where you meet and care for real patients. There, you will join monthly rotations at a GP clinic or community setting while studying in a hospital.

Don’t believe us? Hear from the students themselves.

🔖Bonus Fact:

BSMS’ medical course also includes a Time for Dementia programme. It gives you time with a person living with dementia and their carer.

Back on campus, you can further boost your skills with the facilities around you. The anatomy and clinical science labs allow you to dig deep into understanding the human body. Meanwhile, the simulation consultation room creates another place to practice people skills outside your placements.

Speaking of pursuing medicine, this degree also comes with accreditation by the Malaysian Medical Council. Meaning, you also qualify to become a registered practitioner in the country.

Engineering Courses

Do failures scare you? Don’t worry—they are part of the learning experience at the University of Brighton. Engineering students here learn to take ownership of their progress and be resourceful.

In 2020, Dr Angad Panesar and a group of students founded the Sustainable Technology & Engineering Projects (STEP Lab). Within the facility, rules like ‘S.M.A.R.T’ projects and ‘1 Step Forward, 2 Steps Back’ build a proactive environment. Moreover, the lab has an experienced community and industry tools to support your journey, including

  • the liquid and gas flow sensors
  • rotating and linear machines
  • heat exchangers and coolers

As such, many exciting projects were successfully born. Take Erin, Connor, Sadiq, Ade and Don’s LOBSTER project as an example. No, not this 🦞lobster but Logical Outputs Based on Statistics and Testing for End-of-life Re-purposing (L.O.B.S.T.E.R). Their goal was to analyse electric vehicle batteries’ life cycle and then consider the next process for them.

Additionally, you can shadow a peer and learn from them during your studies. These opportunities will build skills essential for your career. You may be assigned to help with tests and analyse data.

“I shadowed Enric, a placement student from France who worked on a MATLAB script. Through this volunteered internship, I was introduced to thermodynamic processes much before they were taught to me. I also learnt how to conduct and document scientific research which has been helpful throughout my academic journey.” – Nandish Karmani, an aeronautical engineering student.

If you plan on becoming an engineer, the University of Brighton has accreditations to boost your employability. Among them are

  • Engineering Council UK, a signage of the Washington Accord
  • The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
  • Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

Business Management With Tourism

We heard Brighton is a tourist spot but did you know it had about 9 million trips in 2020? Yes, the city’s tourism sector has been supporting its economy. According to The Economic Impact of Tourism on Brighton and Hove 2020, 6.7% of the population was employed because of tourism. With such a thriving industry nearby, it is the perfect learning opportunity.

The University of Brighton has recognition from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Chartered Management Institute. It upholds high standards and gives you a well-rounded study experience. Recently, it built a new home for the School of Business and Law, called the Elm House. The Elm House houses a Bloomberg Trading Room, an Enterprise Suite, and a 3-storey atrium for relaxation. There is also a placement office to help students secure their internship or placement.

business management with tourism at the university of brighton

Moreover, the University teaches you how to run a business within the tourism sector. It first introduces core business management principles and practices. Then, you dive into the tourism industry and use your business knowledge to

  • market a destination
  • resolve issues within the industry
  • create plans and strategies to manage the destination

“What if I’m not ready for the field?” The University’s placement year gives you one year off your studies and more insights about the industry. During that time, you will also complete a business project, allowing you to research your favourite topics. Previously, students had worked at

  • American Express
  • Hewlett Packard
  • Microsoft
  • Disney

Otherwise, you can turn to your peers or mentors for advice. The University of Brighton is home to a bright and innovative community. For example, a Business Management student, Harry Noble created his own online gaming business before his course began.

Biomedical Science

Ever wonder why stepping on a rusty nail can be fatal? Well, take Biomedical Science at the University of Brighton and find out. The degree delves into human health while exploring ways to diagnose and treat diseases.

Back in Form 5, you may have studied cell structures, the reproductive system – or what we consider now as the tip of Biology. Here, you will explore

  • infections and immunity
  • blood sciences (e.g. haematology, coagulations and blood transfusion)
  • human physiology, biochemistry and metabolism
  • cell pathology
  • diet and exercise
  • pharmacology

You can also practice those theories at specialised facilities on campus. For instance, you can examine cell genes and proteins in the genomics/proteomics facility. Or, detect changes in cells with the rt-pcr equipment. If you are new to a microbiology lab, a technical support team will be there to help.

For those with a change of heart, the Biomedical Science course here allows you to embark on a medical course. These applications take place after Y1 or the final year. Once you meet all the requirements, you will get a guaranteed interview with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS).

The good news is that the University of Brighton is recognised for its excellent learning environment. It received accreditations from the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the Royal Society of Biology. Above all, your lecturers are specialised and experienced in the subject. Course leader, Dr Louise MacKenzie specialises in innate immunity and signalling and inflammation. She joined researchers in developing an analytical method to predict who has COVID-19 at an early stage with simple blood tests.
