The case of Edward Wong’s STPM results failing to land him a spot at the university of his dreams has sparked debate nationwide.

Edward Wong Yi Xian, a student from SMJK Jit Sin, Penang, aspired to study Accounting at one of Malaysia’s most prestigious universities, Universiti Malaya.

Applying via UPU, his near-perfect STPM results of 4.0 CGPA and 9.9/10 extra-curricular score, which gave him a total merit score of 99.9%, failed to land him his dream university to study accounting.

While we won’t comment on the story further, we do have an alternative option to explore. We know two factors in his application: ranking and budget. So, we conducted a little experiment: If Edward had taken the private university route with his STPM results, would he have landed a scholarship?

Match Accounting Scholarships In Malaysia With Edward Wong’s STPM Results Using Pathway Match™

Using Uni Enrol’s proprietary software, Pathway Match™, we have set some conditions for this hypothetical application. We will explain along the way.

2. Provide Non-Academic Achievements – We will not account for his extracurricular activities for this thought experiment, as not much is known other than his overall STPM results.

3. Family Profile Information – We will assume that one of the reasons why he applied via UPU is due to budget constraints, and we will set the household income to a lower denomination. Pathway Match™ is able to match scholarships and PTPTN eligibility that are based on non-academic criteria.

6. Private or Public Preference – For the sake of this experiment, we will set his option to just private universities to see what they have to offer.

7. Decide Your Priorities – He is looking for universities that are of high ranking (since we know he had UM in his sights), and budget is one of his concerns when choosing a university.

We will also note that he has been offered scholarships from some private institutions, so we will take the universities mentioned out of consideration (to see what other options he could have).

After all the information is provided, Pathway Match™ will instantly shortlist universities offering accounting courses AND match Edward to the exact amount of scholarships and PTPTN loan that he qualifies for based on his stellar STPM results and other criteria.

Uni Enrol's Pathway Match shows you the potential scholarships you can be awarded

Based on all the conditions set in the application, you can see that there are 43 universities with a total of 132 awards (in the form of scholarships and bursaries) that Edward could be eligible for.

That’s quite a lot! We’d need a professional who can provide us with proper information and recommendations to find the best match for him, though.

Our hypothetical Edward was assigned to Chee Yi, Uni Enrol’s experienced counsellor, who has counselled over 1,000 students during his time here. Chee Yi also has a lot of experience working with students who were looking for alternatives after receiving their UPU results.

With the information that our counsellor gathered from Edward’s Pathway Match™ results, Chee Yi analysed the list of options and shortlisted 3 choices that best fit Edward’s preferences based on the input provided in Pathway Match™ and further consultation with Edward.

Here are the detailed reasons behind each shortlisted option:

Option 1 – Taylor’s University:

  • Taylor’s is the #1 Private University in SEA in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
  • Although the fees require a relatively higher budget, Edward would be eligible for the Taylor’s University Excellence Award, which will be instantly approved as soon as he applies. With the bursary, he has a tuition fee waiver of up to RM13,000 annually.
  • His results entitle him to a 75% PTPTN loan, and in addition to a deduction of RM39,000 (RM13,000/year), his net total fees will be RM45,586 for the duration of the course
  • That breaks it down to approximately RM15,000 a year, and with Taylor’s having 3 semesters annually, his fees per semester would average RM5,000, making the cost a manageable rate.

Check out our guide to Taylor’s University:

Option 2 – Asia Pacific University (APU):

  • Based on his results and the best match, he is eligible for the APU Merit Awardwhich provides a tuition fee waiver of up to 50%.
  • This scholarship is first come, first serve, but we can assist him in ensuring he will be able to obtain the scholarship.
  • Like earlier, Edward can apply for a 75% PTPTN loan. As his results also entitle him to a full 50% waiver, RM49,900 will be deducted from the total fees (after successful application). After total deduction, he will only need to pay RM20,100 in total fees (3 years).
  • Let’s break it down further: Edward only pays RM 6,700 per year after waivers and PTPTN. Annually, APU has 2-3 semesters (depending on the course you take). Taking 2 semesters annually, he will only pay approximately RM3,350 per semester.

Check out our guide to Asia Pacific University (APU):

Option 3 – MMU University:

  • MMU University is a semi-private institution, which means that its ties to the public sector enhance and provide employment flexibility, giving him the best of both worlds upon graduation.
  • He will need to sit for an interview before he can obtain the scholarship, and we can give him some pointers on how he can ace it!
  • As Edward’s results qualify him to apply for a 100% scholarship with MMU, we applied it in this example to demonstrate the outcome. However, all universities require eligible students to be awarded through an interview process.
  • If Edward does not secure the 100% scholarship, his next best alternative is a 50% waiver via the MMU Merit Scholarship (For high-performing students with B40 family background).
  • Taking this alternative as a reference, his total fees (3 years) will amount to RM32,595. In addition to his PTPTN loan (75%), his total fees will now be RM1,995. That’s RM665 per year!

We also asked Chee Yi if there are other scholarships available for Edward, to which he added:

“There are several third-party scholarships that are available for a high scorers like Edward, such as the Shell Scholarship, Petronas, and CIMB Asean Scholarship. He will, however, need to be aware of the terms and conditions that they have set for their applications.”

Consider Applying To Private Universities In Malaysia

Besides public universities, there are other alternatives that you should not ignore.

There is a misconception that ALL private universities are beyond affordable, and that isn’t exactly true, as many provide good scholarships. Your results need not even be as high as Edward Wong’s STPM results to secure a partial scholarship.

Uni Enrol’s Pathway Match is a great tool to help. In just under 10 minutes, you will be able to narrow down your available options AND know what scholarships or bursaries are available, as we’ve demonstrated in this article.

Apart from Pathway Match™, you will be able to enjoy these benefits with Uni Enrol:

  • Access to 200+ universities across Malaysia and abroad.
  • Experienced, knowledgeable counsellors.
  • Easy scholarship and course application online.
  • Constant updates on your enrolment status.
