Universiti Malaya is Malaysia’s oldest university, founded in 1905. It also holds the prestige of being one of Malaysia’s top universities globally, ranking as the nation’s highest and placing globally at #58 in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
That being said, it might seem like an arduous task to apply and successfully enrol in a university of that stature.
We’re here to tell you that the dream is not entirely out of reach! Here’s how you can apply to University Malaya, via the conventional route and the alternative route!
1. About Universiti Malaya

Tracing its roots back to the King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1905 and Raffles College in 1928, Universiti Malaya was officially formed on October 8, 1949, following the merger of these two institutions.
In 1962, the institution split again, with the other institution forming the University of Singapore, eventually becoming the National University of Singapore.
That’s right! UM and NUS have very strong ties, with many academic collaborations in the field of medicine, engineering, business, and law, just to name a few.
Situated on a 922-acre campus in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, the university boasts convenient amenities and transport within its compounds, amazing greenery, and the hustle and bustle of social activities due to its proximity to the nation’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Academically, the university is renowned for its excellence in teaching, research and innovation. Globally, it is known as a Premier Research University, driving impact through over 50 research centres all around the world.
In 2025, over 39,000 students from over 80 countries enrolled at Universiti Malaya for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies, further cementing their prestige as Malaysia’s top university. Notable alumni include our national leaders, such as Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

2. How Can I Apply To Universiti Malaya?

Here are 2 ways that you can apply to Universiti Malaya:
- List down Universiti Malaya as one of your 12 choices in your Unit Pengambilan Universiti (UPU) application.
- Alternative/Open Channels.
Apply To Universiti Malaya Via UPU:
UPU is the agency and system to apply for these types of higher education institutions:
- Public Universities
- Polytechnics
- Community Colleges
- Institut Latihan Kemahiran Awam (ILKA)
UPU is one of the commonly known pathways to enter public institutions such as Universiti Malaya, and you can also choose 11 other institutions as your choices.
The caveat: You may not receive an offer letter from your first-choice university, or you might not even get into any of the 12 choices at all. Applying to a public university can be highly competitive, as there is a limited number of spots available allocated to students applying via UPU.
There is also a possibility of missing your UPU deadline due to various reasons, which could affect your entry through this pathway.
DON’T WORRY, there is a solution. You can either appeal your decision (which may not guarantee your chances of enrolling at UM), or enter via an alternative route or an open channel.
Apply To University Malaya Via Their Open Channel, UM Saluran SATU
That’s right, there is an alternative entry to be part of Universiti Malaya, which is via their open channel.
Open channels, or commonly known as alternative channels, is a direct pathway to the university, ideal for those who have either missed their UPU application deadline, didn’t get the offer, or are looking to enter public universities through a different pathway (such as A-Levels, Diploma)

Here are key highlights you’d need to know to apply via the UM open channel pathway:

3. UPU vs UM SATU Course Fees

One of the outstanding differences between applying via UPU and the open channel (i.e. UM SATU) is the course fees you are to pay.
Via UPU, you will pay significantly lower fees, as compared to if you had enrolled through UM Saluran SATU. That’s because UPU enrolments are subsidised by the government, while this UM open channel is not. This is one of the biggest reasons why competition is high for spots through the UPU is pathway.
For example, a Foundation in Life Sciences at Universiti Malaya costs RM2,950 for students enrolling via UPU, while UM Saluran SATU Applicants pay the full fee of RM19,600 for the same course.
There may be misconceptions that UM Saluran SATU applicants are paying the same fees as International students, which is not the case. Students who are enrolling via the international pathway will pay a separate International Student course fee.
“In our view, this is well worth it as the fees are comparable, if not cheaper than many private universities in Malaysia but you’ll receive the prestige and recognition of a Top 100 globally ranked university”
While there is a stark price difference between UPU and UM Saluran SATU, financial aid is available for those who are applying through the latter. Through the open channel, you are able to apply for financial aid from external organisations such as PTPTN, MARA and JPA.
