1.1 Background

The University of Southampton has 7 campuses, 6 in the UK and 1 in Malaysia. Southampton Malaysia was invited by the Malaysian Government to establish a branch campus for engineering within the EduCity development in Iskandar Johor. Since opening its doors in 2012 and producing its first batch of a successful cohort of engineering students in 2016, the university has since expanded its course offerings to computing and business studies.

In October 2021, the university relocated to a new estate in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, 15 minutes from the Second Link Bridge into Singapore, and 20 minutes from Johor Bahru city centre. The new multi-storey building is 150,000 sqft in size and equipped with first-class teaching & research facilities, open learning spaces, and a host of learning facilities such as a new library with an attached computer suite, 4 electrical and electronics Labs, an aerospace lab (equipped with a wind tunnel), a design studio, experimental Llabs and a 12-terminal Bloomberg suite.  

According to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, which assesses the quality of research in UK higher education institutions, 92% of the University of Southampton’s research is world leading or internationally excellent. Location and Surrounding Vibe: Southampton Malaysia is located in EduCity Iskandar Puteri, an area designated by the state of Johor as a destination for quality higher education with other foreign universities setting up campuses there as well. 

Southampton Malaysia’s campus is located in a large commercial complex that offers a wide range of restaurants, cafes, shops and medical facilities. The large EduCity Sports Complex sits near the campus and is shared with other students from the nearby universities located in the area which fosters interactions within a larger ecosystem of students.

EduCity is a beautifully landscaped 300-acre mixed development that hosts not only students and researchers but also budding startups via the EduCity Hub and athletes who use the world-class sports facilities to train.

Ease of Accessibility to Campus: It is to get around the area with punctual shuttle bus services that go around and outside the area. You can easily get to all the various attraction sites such as Legoland, X-Park and shopping malls in Johor Bahru city centre which is only 30 minutes away. As Singapore is only 1 hour’s travel across the straits via the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link expressway, you can take a weekend trip anytime you like.

Larkin Sentral is the central bus terminal located in Johor Bahru. The station offers direct bus services to and from many cities and towns in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Hat Yai in Thailand. It is a 30-minute drive from EduCity.

Financial Aids

Under Southampton’s Aeronautics & Astronautics Engineering course, you get the opportunity to experience studying in the UK. The first 2 years in Malaysia and final 2 years in UK to receive lessons from industry experts and train with the best facilities available.
