In a recent episode of “Uni Spills” by Uni Enrol, our host Angel Lim visited the stunning Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur to catch up with Jayden, a smartly dressed intern who is learning the ropes of the hospitality industry firsthand.

Angel (Host): I love your outfit! Are you a bellboy?
Jayden (Intern): No, no, I’m not the bellboy! The bellboy is right outside. My name is Jayden, and I’m an intern here at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Right now, I’m working in the front office.
Angel: How long have you been working here at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur?
Jayden: I’ve been working here for three months! Before this, I was studying for my Diploma in Hotel Management at YTL International College of Hotel Management. So, this is actually my second year of IP (Industrial Placement).
Angel: Apart from the front office, what are your other responsibilities as a YTL-ICHM Hotel Management intern?
Jayden: As a supervisor, we look at the room attendants to ensure they are making the rooms clean and meeting expectations and standards.
We have a room inspection checklist system. We will not release a room first; we will come in and check whether the rooms and beds are clean, if there are any stains, if the tables are clean, if there is dust, or if there are thumbprints. If everything is clean, then the supervisor will release the room from the room inspection checklist system!
Angel: So you will Quality Check (QC) everything?
Jayden: Yes, yes. Everything, definitely. For the guests’ safety and hygiene as well.
Angel: When deciding on your internship, what made you choose The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur?
Jayden: This is a very luxurious hotel, and it’s a five-star hotel! It feels like you went back into the 1930s. It has a very different vibe. I am very grateful that YTL-ICHM allowed me to be placed here and work because the people and the supervisors here are very, very nice.
They patiently answered all my questions when they were busy, and I have learned a lot of skills, like answering phone calls and talking to guests. Talking to guests is a very wonderful moment!
Angel: Out of curiosity, have you ever had hotel guests make unforgettable, weird, or special requests while working here?
Jayden: Yes, I do have one very unforgettable event! I was working at the concierge, and a lovely couple from Singapore came in and asked, “Jayden, where can we go to Chinatown?”
It was almost my time to end my shift. So, I politely asked, “Is it okay if I bring you to Chinatown?” And they said, “Yeah, sure! Definitely!” So I brought them around, talked to them about the good food there, and showed them the go-to spots in Chinatown.
The next day, they actually gave me a two-page letter note saying thank you, and a big tip! I was so happy!
