Angel (Host): To kick things off, any advice for high school leavers looking to start their university journey?
Gerald (Student): I would say that if you want to continue your degree at this university, I feel like you also need to complete the Foundation Studies here. The Foundation here – the Foundation in Business, is basically a direct pathway straight to your degree!
Angel: Awesome! Can you introduce yourself and tell us what your current major is?
Gerald: My name is Gerald, and I am currently majoring in Actuarial Science!
Angel: There are quite a few options out there. Why did you choose to study at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia specifically?
Gerald: Okay, so first of all, I think that Heriot-Watt University Malaysia has done an excellent job by offering 6 professional paper exemptions (CS1 and 2, CM1 and 2, CB1 and 2). Other universities might only have 3 or 4, and some even have none! Because Heriot-Watt has 6 block exemptions, you don’t have to waste any more time after your graduation sitting for those papers.
Also, Heriot-Watt has a really good reputation in Actuarial Science and is recognised by the Society of Actuaries (SOA). So, that is why I chose to pursue my Heriot-Watt Malaysia Actuarial Science degree here!
Angel: For people who want to become an actuary, how important actually are these paper exemptions?
Gerald: I feel like these are incredibly important for your employment purposes after your graduation. If you want to pursue a more technical, more specific job role inside actuarial studies, you need to have those kinds of exemptions to get a higher role straight out of graduation.
Employers will absolutely look at this type of paper exemption, like the total number of exemptions you already have, before they hire you. Having these will definitely increase your chances of getting hired!
