Mechanical Engineering Student Interview Heriot-Watt University Malaysia

Welcome back to another exciting episode of “Uni Spills” by Uni Enrol! Today, our host Angel Lim is exploring the impressive mechanical engineering labs at the Heriot-Watt Malaysia campus. She had a chat with a brilliant female student who is breaking stereotypes in the world of STEM.

If you are a student; especially a girl with a passion for physics and math, looking for the perfect Mechanical Engineering course in Malaysia, you are going to want to hear her story! We sat down to transcribe this insightful Q&A session to give you a firsthand look at what it is really like to study Mechanical Engineering in Heriot-Watt Malaysia.

Let’s dive into the interview at No 1 Jalan Venna P5/2, Precinct 5, 62200 Putrajaya, Malaysia!

Angel (Host): Can you tell us why you chose to study Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt Malaysia?

Student: I came here specifically because of their “Go Global” programme! It is an inter-campus transfer program that allows me to go to the UK or even transfer to the Dubai campus. Because the syllabus is exactly the same across all three of their global campuses, it allows me the incredible opportunity to travel and explore completely different environments and cultures while I study.

Angel: That sounds like an amazing opportunity! What do you love most about the Heriot-Watt Malaysia Mechanical Engineering program?

Student: What I love most is the design aspect of the course! We learn how to use professional software to draw and create 3D models. That was something totally new to me! When I initially learned about mechanical engineering, I thought it was only about heavy machines, engines, and cars. But it’s not just that, there is a huge creative and design element to it that I really enjoy.

Angel: Are you currently working on any interesting projects or research in your classes?

Student: Yes! Currently, I am working on a project involving the torrefaction of palm oil. The palm oil industry produces a lot of waste, so my project focuses on utilising that palm oil waste and processing it to produce biochar. Basically, it is all about efficiently utilising waste products to create something new and useful!

Angel: As a female engineering student, do you have any advice for girls out there who want to pursue a Mechanical Engineering course in Malaysia, knowing it is a male-dominated field?

Student: I do agree with the stereotype that not a lot of girls go into mechanical engineering. But my advice is this: If you love science, if you love maths, or if you love physics, just go for it!

Also, make sure to surround yourself with a lot of supportive peers as well as your mentors. Having these people around you will help you grow so much in your journey and your studies. Don’t let the stereotypes stop you!
