Chemcial Engineering At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia | Degree Unboxing

Have you ever thought of chemistry as a literal superpower? Angel Lim from Uni Enrol recently visited the Heriot-Watt Malaysia campus to meet an Associate Professor who certainly does! Dr Pang Ming Meng, from the School of Engineering & Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, confidently claims that her ultimate superpower is “being good with chemicals.”

Rather than creating risky cinematic explosions, chemical engineers are the brilliant masterminds who develop new materials and innovative processes to ensure a sustainable future for us all. If you are curious about what it takes to master this superpower, here is an exclusive unboxing of the Heriot-Watt Malaysia Chemical Engineering program!

Only at No 1 Jalan Venna P5/2, Precinct 5, 62200 Putrajaya, Malaysia.

🌍 A Legacy of Engineering Excellence

When searching for a high-quality Chemical Engineering course in Malaysia, pedigree and reputation matter. This institution has been teaching chemical engineering for over 50 impressive years! That long-standing expertise is clearly reflected in their elite rankings. According to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026, their program proudly ranks in the Top 10 in the UK.

🔬 Inside the Unit Operation Lab

To see where the real magic happens, Dr Pang took Angel on a tour of the state-of-the-art Unit Operation Lab. This is where students get hands-on experience with massive, industry-standard machinery.

The lab is divided into several key functional components so students can master every step of the manufacturing pipeline:

  • The Reactor Unit: This is where the core chemistry takes place! Students learn how to feed in various raw reactants, manage the chemical reaction, and extract the final products (as well as monitor unreacted materials and byproducts).
  • The Separation Unit: After a chemical reaction is complete, the desired product needs to be carefully purified. Students use sophisticated equipment such as the Gas Absorption and Desorption Unit to skillfully separate unwanted elements from the final mix.
  • The Control Unit: Chemical reactions require absolute precision. This automated system teaches students how to safely and accurately control the exact flow rate, temperature, and pressure inside the reactors.

🏭 Top Careers & Major Industries

How does this highly technical degree actually benefit your future? The career opportunities are incredibly vast! Graduates frequently step into specialised roles such as Process Engineers, Product Engineers, R&D Engineers, and Safety Engineers.

Because chemical processes are essential for creating almost everything we use, graduates are in extremely high demand across a multitude of profitable industries:

  • Oil and Gas: The highest-profit sector, with students often landing roles at global giants like Petronas and Shell.
  • Palm Oil: Major corporate players in Malaysia include IOI and KLK.
  • Glove Manufacturing: Top employers for safety and chemical materials include Top Glove and Kossan.
  • Food & Beverage: Surprisingly, chemical engineers are heavily relied upon by massive food companies like Nestle to safely process, preserve, and package our favourite foods!

🎓 Internships and Professional Accreditation

To ensure students are completely industry-ready, those who study Chemical Engineering at Heriot-Watt Malaysia are required to complete a minimum of 10 weeks of industrial placement during their third year. Students regularly secure internships at multinational powerhouses like Panasonic, Daikin, Intel, and Petronas. The best part? Many students secure full-time job offers directly from these placements before they even graduate!

Furthermore, the university’s 4-year MEng (Master of Engineering) degree offers a highly prestigious dual accreditation. The program is recognised by both the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in the UK and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). This means that graduates immediately meet the educational baseline required to eventually apply for Chartered Engineer status from the UK or become an Ir. (Professional Engineer) in Malaysia!
