Arts and Design Courses
Arts and Design courses are built in a way where while it is fully practical, there are other key elements like building a personal identity, networks, and opportunities to showcase that make it a truly holistic education experience.
Sheffield Hallam University provides all of these key elements, plus support for students for 5 years after graduation!
Sheffield Hallam University is a member of Creative UK, the body that represents, champions, and supports the UK’s creative industries. Being a part of the faculty allows students to also be a member until they graduate.
The courses are designed with key principles based on engaging with the world, collaborating with others, and exploring new ways, within a supportive environment. The university runs arts and design courses through studio practice (art or digital media studios), workshops, technical demonstrations, live projects, and more.
During their studies, students are encouraged to develop personal identity and style through a portfolio of practical work and active involvement with industry and community. In year 1, students will learn all the necessary fundamentals in the design world. Throughout the years, students are also taught to embrace experimentation, employing a risk-based approach, through their concept of the hand, head, and heart:
- Hand – emphasising risk through play and exploration, the practical and experiential acquiring of knowledge and skills.
- Head – emphasising user research, analysis, and responsible contextual application and production, reinforcing what you’ve learned in year 1.
- Heart – emphasising development and realisation of practitioner identity through practice and engagement with industry and community.
Sheffield Hallam University helps equip its Arts and Design students with the necessary skills outside of the classroom. Students can go on field trips to creative studios, design conferences, and museums locally and abroad. Apart from that, there are live projects students can work on with external parties. They can also showcase their work during the university’s annual Future Now Festival of Creativity, where prominent figures and the public can view it.
Architecture Studies
Sheffield Hallam University’s Architecture course prepares students for the real world from the classroom. The university also aims to create ethical architects, fluent with the technology of today, along with the tools to put students at the forefront of environmental building design.
The teaching staff comprises professional architects and researchers of the field. Occasionally, students will benefit from visiting lecturers from some of the UK’s prestigious architectural practices. Students will learn in a design studio setting, getting them ready for their future firm workspaces.
Students will also have the opportunity to learn more about real architecture and theory application through fieldwork, where they will perform site and building visits all across the UK and Europe. Previous destinations include Rome, Venice, Barcelona and Berlin!
In the classroom, students will study in state-of-the-art design spaces and architectural labs which include digital fabrication tools such as CAD and BIM, 3D printer laser cutters, and environmental simulation software. Within the workshops and facilities, students will have the support of technicians, ensuring that they fully understand how to use them for their work.
The practical element in learning Architecture is emphasised quite well at Sheffield Hallam University. Students will gain the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement during their 2nd to 3rd years, obtaining an Applied Professional Diploma upon completion.
Students will also be able to work on live projects and briefs, where they will creatively engage with various scenarios, contexts, and clients. Here, students will also learn to cultivate ethical approaches to architectural practice through research, history, and theory modules that they have learned in the classroom.
International Hospitality and Tourism Management
Sheffield Hallam University prides itself on its International Hospitality and Tourism Management course, ranking 6th in the UK for the discipline according to the Guardian University Guide 2023.
The reason? The word “international” from the course, as literal as it is. The university partners with La Trobe University of Australia, where students of both universities studying the course can work together on projects and studies. This unique opportunity allows students to develop business skills essential to thrive in a globally connected organisation.
Students can also opt to do a year in La Trobe’s Bundoora campus, during their 2nd year. During this time, students will undertake 120 hours of work experience as part of their year of study. Choosing this option will give the students an out-of-the-classroom experience in an international environment.
Within the Sheffield Hallam University campus students will involve themselves in group projects to resolve real-life issues, and engage in hotel simulations. Students will also work with specialist software applications from the industry which includes computer simulations of hotel operations. Practical sessions for students will be conducted in state-of-the-art kitchens, restaurants, and hotel facilities in the university.
