Are you someone who loves numbers, strategic planning, and the built environment? If you are hunting for the perfect Quantity Survey course in Malaysia, you will want to hear what current students are saying about their experience.
In a recent episode of “Uni Spills” by Uni Enrol, host Angel Lim visited the modern University of Reading Malaysia campus to chat with Tessa, a bright Year 2 student. They sat down to clear up some major misconceptions about the industry and discuss why the University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) is the ultimate place to master this high-demand field.
Let’s dive into the interview to see what it’s really like to study Quantity Survey at the University of Reading Malaysia! Only at Persiaran Graduan, Kota Ilmu, EduCity, 79200 Iskandar Puteri, Johor, Malaysia.
Angel (Host): Let’s clear the air right away. When a lot of people hear “Quantity Surveying,” they automatically think it is just a standard construction degree where you have to work in construction under the hot sun all day. Is that true?
Tessa (UoRM Student): No, that is a very common misconception! Actually, the University of Reading Malaysia Quantity Survey degree is incredibly versatile. You don’t just have to work in construction. You can work in other industries like Banking and Finance! You can also work as consultants in the Law industry, or even work in Oil and Gas, and Real Estate. It goes way beyond just being on a construction site!
Angel: That is amazing! There are a few universities that offer this degree, so why did you choose to study Quantity Surveying at the University of Reading, Malaysia specifically?
Tessa: First, one of the main reasons is that our QS programme is accredited by four professional bodies: BQSM, RICS, PAQS, and CIOB! I think this is a main reason because it allows us to work internationally. Because our degree is recognised there, we can easily work in places like Australia, Singapore, and even Hong Kong!

Another reason is actually that our degree field, Building and Planning, is currently ranked No. 1 in the UK! So it’s quite well known. Other than that, we are offered world-class facilities right here on the University of Reading Malaysia campus, which are equipped with cutting-edge technology and BIM (Building Information Modelling) software. That is one of the hot topics in the industry right now, so we are learning exactly what employers want.

Angel: University life isn’t just about studying textbooks! What has been one of your absolute best experiences here at UoRM so far?
Tessa: One of the best experiences I’ve had is actually the guest lecturers and guest speakers! One of the reasons why is that they really offer us a valuable opportunity to network. We have had major companies like RLB and Telford come to give us speeches.
Many of them have experience in the industry for over 30 years. I really want to thank my lecturers because they put a lot of effort into organising all these lectures. We have guest lecturers almost every week! Normally, other places might just conduct this once a month or three times a year. But every week? That’s a lot of exposure! 🎤🤝
Angel: Last question! Can you rate your experience here at UoRM out of 10?
Tessa: In terms of the quality of education for QS, I would definitely rank it a 9 out of 10!
Angel: Why a 9 out of 10? Why not a 10?
Tessa: Because I am only in Year 2 now! I still have one more year to go. So maybe in Year 3, it will be an 11 out of 10!
