Have you ever thought of public relations and media as a superpower that can literally save lives? In a recent “Degree Unboxing” episode by Uni Enrol, host Angel Lim visited the vibrant IMU University campus to meet someone who practices this exact superpower every single day!
She sat down with Dr Arlini Binti Alias, the Head of Department for the School of Psychology and Social Sciences at IMU University. Dr Arlini revealed that her number one superpower is advocating and running health campaigns to save people’s lives by working alongside NGOs, hospitals, PR firms, and advertising companies.
But how exactly does one turn communication into a life-saving tool? To answer that, she introduced a groundbreaking new degree. If you are looking for a highly impactful Communications & Media Studies course in Malaysia, here is everything you need to know about this revolutionary program! Only at 126, Jln Jalil Perkasa 19, Bukit Jalil, 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
🌟 A First for Malaysia and Southeast Asia
During the tour, Dr Arlini introduced the IMU University Communications & Media Studies (Healthcare) track; officially known as the Bachelor of Communication with Health.
This program is incredibly special because it is the first of its kind, not just in Malaysia, but in the entire Southeast Asian region!
🛡️ Why Health Communication Matters
We have all heard the famous saying by doctors: “Prevention is better than cure.” Countless health problems can be completely prevented if the public receives the right information at the right time. Dr Arlini used the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic as a prime example. During the lockdowns, there was a massive flood of information online. While some of it was true, a lot of it was dangerous fake news and misinformation.
In fact, the World Health Organisation (WHO) strongly recommends that countries develop proper health communication strategies to combat misinformation and create dynamic contingency plans during emergencies. This global need is exactly why IMU created this degree!
📚 What You Will Learn in Communications with Health?
So, what exactly do you learn when you choose to study Communications & Media Studies (Healthcare) in IMU University?
The syllabus is the perfect hybrid of traditional media training and specialised medical knowledge. Students master core communication foundations like Public Speaking, Visual Communications, and Public Relations. But what truly sets this degree apart is its healthcare-focused subjects, which include:
- Health Promotion Campaigns
- Graphic Design for Medical and Healthcare
- Patient-Healthcare Provider Communication
This unique curriculum teaches students how doctors, nurses, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies communicate effectively with patients and the general public.

🏃♀️ Highly Practical, Hands-On Campaigns
This is not a degree where you just sit in a lecture hall reading textbooks. It is an incredibly practical, hands-on program!
Students are required to work with real organisations to plan and run actual health-related public campaigns, such as a “No Smoking” (Kempen Tak Nak Merokok) initiative. These campaigns aim to raise real health awareness and encourage healthier behaviours in society. The success of a student’s project isn’t just graded by a lecturer; it is actively measured by how the real public responds and by evaluations from their actual clients!
💼 High Industry Demand & Major Partners
Are there jobs waiting for graduates? Absolutely! The demand for this niche skill set is skyrocketing.
Companies across multiple industries are actively hunting for marketing, communications, and PR graduates who actually understand the nuances of the medical world. Graduates can step into high-demand roles working for hospitals, health agencies, NGOs, and corporate wellness brands.
To ensure students are perfectly prepared for the working world, IMU University has teamed up with massive industry partners for their graduate training and placements, including:
- Thomson Hospital
- GoodMorning Global
- Innoquest Pathology
- Sunfert International Fertility Centre
- Dataxet Malaysia
