Have you ever wanted the superpower to teleport across the globe, travel through time, or make objects appear and disappear out of thin air? While those abilities might seem like science fiction, they are actually an everyday reality for Visual Effects artists!
In a recent episode of “Degree Unboxing,” Uni Enrol host Angel Lim took an exciting tour of the APU campus to discover what it takes to master movie magic. She sat down with Mr Jack Lai, the Programme Leader for the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Effects at Asia Pacific University, to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the APU Visual Effects degree.
Here is what they uncovered about one of the most exciting creative tech programs available today! Only at No. 11, Jalan Teknologi 5, Taman Teknologi Malaysia, Bukit Jalil 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.
🎬 Welcome to the Digital Media Centre
The tour kicked off inside the state-of-the-art Digital Media Centre at APU. If you want to take a top-tier Visual Effects course in Malaysia, having access to the right facilities is crucial. Students spend the majority of their time completing assignments and projects in these specialised zones, which include:
- High-Tech 3D Labs
- A Professional Green Screen Studio
- A Dedicated Sound Recording Studio
🎥 Film Production vs. Visual Effects: What’s the Difference?
A common question students ask is how this degree differs from a traditional film production course.
Mr Lai explained it perfectly: A degree in film production typically handles the physical, on-set elements like operating cameras, setting up lighting, designing physical sets, and directing actors.
On the other hand, those who study Visual Effects at APU are heavily focused on post-production. VFX artists take that original live-action footage and extend its reality by seamlessly combining it with CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). They build the incredible worlds, creatures, and explosive effects that cannot be captured with a standard camera lens.

💻 Mastering the 3D Pipeline
To create these mind-bending visuals, students need a rock-solid foundation in 3D software. Asia Pacific University places a heavy focus on both artistic creativity and technical skills by guiding students through the entire industry-standard production workflow:
- Concept Design & Modelling: Creating the base 3D models using software like Autodesk Maya.
- Texturing: Adding realistic surfaces and colours using tools like Substance Painter.
- Lighting & Rendering: Bringing the scene to life, often utilising powerful engines like Unreal Engine for real-time rendering.
- Green Screen Integration & Compositing: Merging the digital creations flawlessly with live-action video.

🚀 Real-World Experience and “On the Spot” Job Offers
One of the most unique aspects of the APU Visual Effects program is its approach to internships and career readiness, which contributes to the university’s impressive 100% employability rate.
Instead of waiting until the very end of their degree, students complete their internships between their second and third years. This strategic placement ensures that students go out into the industry, learn real-world skills, and then bring that knowledge back to apply to their Final Year Project (FYP).
During their final year, students tackle a massive Capstone Project that runs exactly like a real studio production. At the end of the semester, APU hosts a Final Year Exhibition where industry guests are invited to view the students’ portfolios. According to Mr Lai, it is incredibly common for talented students to receive job offers right there on the spot!
