Welcome back to another episode of “Uni Spills” by Uni Enrol! Today, host Angel Lim caught up with an international Visual Effects student, all the way from Indonesia, at the vibrant library on the APU campus.

We sat down for this fun Q&A session to give you the inside scoop on what it’s like to take a Visual Effects course in Malaysia at Asia Pacific University (DU030(W) No. 11, Jalan Teknologi 5, Taman Teknologi Malaysia, Bukit Jalil 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur).
Here is what he had to say about his studies, living abroad, and his awesome internship experience!
Angel (Host): Before we talk about your studies, how are you liking Malaysia so far?
APU Student: Honestly, compared to my place back in Indonesia, the public transport here is really nice! I know using public transport can be a controversial topic for some people here, but back in Indonesia, the public transport was just not as developed. Also, I really wanted to explore more and go international. I wanted to experience living somewhere else, living alone, and becoming independent!
Angel: That is awesome! So, can you tell me what you are currently studying right now at APU?
APU Student: I am currently studying APU Visual Effects!
Angel: For those who might not know, what exactly is Visual Effects?
APU Student: When people think about Visual Effects, the first thing they usually think about is films, movies, animations, and things like that. Basically, it involves 3D works, compositing, and creating cool effects like fire or even massive explosions! It also includes creating 3D models from scratch, like robots or Transformers. Essentially, it is all about films, games, or animations.
Angel: Out of all the places you could go, what made you choose to study Visual Effects in APU?
APU Student: When I was applying and looking for a degree, I realised that other universities in Malaysia actually don’t offer a specific degree in Visual Effects. APU is one of the rare places that actually offers this exact degree. So, I ended up choosing here!
Angel: APU is known for getting students ready for the real world. Have you done any internships before?
APU Student: Yeah! I did my internship between my Year 2 and Year 3. I actually worked for a company that specialises in a holographic system. They use these super cool holographic fans to do advertising. When it spins, it looks as if the 3D item shown on the fan is actually floating in mid-air! 🤯
Angel: That sounds incredible! What was the coolest project you worked on during that internship?
APU Student: I did an advertisement for Hershey’s, which involved Reese’s and Kisses chocolates! For that project, we had to create the 3D models completely from scratch. Then, we had to animate them and create all the visual effects for the chocolate pouring and floating. That was the main project, and it is super memorable for me! 🍫✨
