Angel: I understand that the APU Computer Science degree program has four main specialisms: Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Digital Forensics, and Artificial Intelligence. Just out of curiosity, which of these are in the highest demand right now?
Dr Tan: Right now, two of the fastest-growing fields are Data Analytics and Cybersecurity. To give you an idea of the demand, a report from about three years ago showed that Malaysia needed roughly 13,000 data scientists, but we only had around 5,000! There is a massive gap that needs to be filled.
At the same time, Cybersecurity is always incredibly hot.
Angel: That makes sense! Why is there such a massive boom for a Cyber Security course in Malaysia right now?
Dr. Tan: Think about it; as a society, we are getting more and more connected. Everybody uses e-banking, e-wallets, and Touch ‘n Go.
Because so much of our personal information and finances are stored on these digital platforms, everybody tries to penetrate those systems. This makes cybersecurity incredibly important. It’s not just banks that need protection anymore; corporate organisations and even accounting firms all have their own dedicated cybersecurity centres now. If you want a secure career, choosing to study Cyber Security at APU is a fantastic move because the APU Cyber Security program trains you exactly for what these companies are desperately looking for.

Angel: So, Data Analytics and Cybersecurity are the top dogs today. But if I’m planning for my future, what is going to be the absolute biggest trend in the next 2 to 5 years?
Dr Tan: If you ask me what is going to explode in the next two, three, or five years… the answer is Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Malaysian government is putting a massive focus on AI right now. From healthcare and manufacturing to accounting and even restaurants, every industry is going to be reliant on AI.
