Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a digital superhero? In a recent episode of “Degree Unboxing,” Uni Enrol’s Angel Lim took a trip to the high-tech APU campus to explore what it is really like to take an APU Computer Science degree with a specialisation in Cyber Security.
Her tour guide was none other than Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Tan Chin Ike, the Head of the School of Computing at Asia Pacific University. When asked what his number one superpower was, Dr Tan joked that it was “trying to look young,” before admitting his real powers lie in programming, design, and a strong artistic sense.
Here is a breakdown of the incredible facilities and insights they uncovered at No. 11, Jalan Teknologi 5, Taman Teknologi Malaysia, Bukit Jalil 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur!
🌐 Welcome to the Cyber Security Talent Zone
Stepping into the APU campus, Angel was immediately blown away by the university’s state-of-the-art Cyber Security Talent Zone. Featuring a massive, glowing live cyber threat map tracking attacks across the globe, the room looks like a command centre straight out of an action movie.
Dr Tan proudly noted that it is one of the first dedicated cybersecurity talent zones established in a private university in Malaysia. This impressive setup isn’t just for students to admire; it acts as a highly functional training ground for bootcamps and workshops involving major industry partners.

🕵️♂️ Inside the Security Operations Centre (SOC)
Behind highly secure glass doors lies the Security Operations Centre. If you want to take a top-tier Cyber Security course in Malaysia, this is where the real magic happens. Dr Tan explained that the lab and the coursework are built around three core pillars:
- Offence: Students learn ethical hacking and penetration testing, essentially figuring out how to break into systems like a real hacker.
- Defence: Learning how to fortify digital gates and prevent those very attacks from happening.
- Forensics: Investigating the aftermath of a digital breach to discover where the attack originated, what data was stolen, and how to stop it from happening again.
🔌 Industry-Centric Learning: The Cisco Lab
The tour also highlighted the Cisco Networking Academy lab. Cisco is a globally recognised industry partner for IT and networking hardware and software solutions. By practising directly in this lab, students who study Cyber Security in APU get their hands on the same tools that top professionals use worldwide, bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.

🏆 The Secret Sauce: 100% Employability
So, how do students in this field stand out from the crowd? Dr Tan shared a jaw-dropping statistic: APU students enter around 500 tech competitions each year, winning about 300 of them in just the last two years!
Participating in these hackathons and competitions is the perfect way to build confidence, teamwork, and an understanding of real-world industry projects.
Unlike traditional educational models, APU’s philosophy views the industry as its main customer and stakeholder. It is their ultimate responsibility to ensure every graduate has the technical skills, soft skills, and competitive edge needed to thrive. This dedicated, industry-first approach is exactly why the university maintains an incredible 100% employability rate.
