1. Introduction
Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM) has a rich history in Malaysia as a premier provider of health sciences courses going back to 1993. MUCM was first established by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Group from India and a local partner in Malaysia, JVMC Corporation Sdn. Bhd to produce the first batch of MBBS students.
With the inaugural success, Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC) and the campus that it is known today was established in 2001. Fast forward, the institution has since launched more courses, opened a campus branch in India, expanded its facilities and secured the University College status from the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia in 2020 and thus was renamed as MUCM.
The institution has always been known to cater for a relatively small but high quality cohort of students every year, especially for its MBBS and BDS courses. Thus the demand for a place at MUCM is high every year.

2.1 MUCM Melaka Campus Review

Location and Surrounding Vibe: The MUCM Melaka Campus sits along the major road of Jalan Tun Abdul Razak in Melaka and is surrounded by the quiet residential area of Taman Desa Baru. Within the campus, there are sports facilities to keep you active such as a swimming pool, well-equipped gym, football field, futsal court, badminton courts, outdoor tennis courts and a basketball court.
The campus building is well maintained with sufficient learning and practice facilities such as clinical skills training labs, simulation rooms, an anatomy lab, a dental prosthetic lab, multi-disciplinary labs, and many more. The library has common study spaces as well as discussion rooms. There’s also an on-campus dental clinic for real clients to receive treatments.
Ease of Accessibility to Campus: The campus is situated further north of Melaka city and only takes a 10-minute drive to reach where various attractions and food spots abound. There’s also ample parking space next to the main building of the campus.
2.2 MUCM Muar Campus Review
MUCM has a campus in Muar, Johor. This campus is dedicated mainly for MBBS students who started in the Melaka Campus and later undergo their advanced clinical years at the Muar Campus and are posted to partner hospitals in Johor.
2.3 Learning Resources & Recreational Facilities
MBBS and Dental Surgery
The MBBS facilities are spread over the Melaka and Muar campus where students will receive different types of training, basic and advanced and are posted to partner hospitals.
The Dental Surgery training happens on the Melaka campus. It boasts a total of 127 chairs distributed across various clinics and outpatient departments, giving tons of opportunities for practical learning and patient interaction. Technology such as digital oral scanners, 3D printers, and fully equipped implant clinics are used to create dental moulds.
2.4 Student Activities
Aside from sports facilities, there are also about 20+ clubs & societies to enrich your social life on campus and let you pursue your interests with a diverse group of people. These groups relate to interests in academics, sports, music, dance, debate, religion, art, adventure, and even sign language!

2.6 MUCM Student Accommodation
On-Campus: MUCM provides affordable on-campus student accommodation. The male and female hostels are separated. Each room is a fully furnished single room with an attached bathroom, water heater and air-conditioning. Room rate is RM500 per month. However, it is not inclusive of the electricity bill.
Off-Campus: There are other options which are recommended by MUCM i.e. Peringgit Heights and Ixora Apartment, which are only 5-10 minutes drive from the campus.
The general cost of living in Melaka, excluding accommodation, for students studying on-campus typically ranges between RM700 and RM1,000 per month. This would cover expenses like food, transportation, books, and miscellaneous personal expenses. Please note, these are estimates and actual costs may vary based on individual lifestyle and choices.

PTPTN Financial Aids
Malaysian students can apply for the National Higher Education Fund or PTPTN which is responsible for giving loans to students pursuing tertiary education. PTPTN falls under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education.
You can borrow from RM3,400 to a maximum of RM50,000 per annum depending on the level and type of course you are taking. PTPTN only charges an annual interest rate of about 1%.

MBBS

The MBBS course is a 5-year degree that is segmented into

You will spend your time at the Melaka and Muar campuses to receive basic and advanced training as well as postings to partner hospitals in Melaka and Johor.
In the pre-clinical years, you are exposed to cadaveric dissection complemented with an Anatomage table that provides 3D visualization and virtual dissection tool for anatomy and physiology.
During the clinical years, aside from being assigned to partner hospitals to get real-world exposure, you will also use augmented virtual reality teaching tools to enhance your skills in medical procedures.
The teaching faculty consists of local and foreign experienced academicians. You also get the opportunity to undertake a one-month clinical elective posting locally or internationally. International posting is to Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India, being the founding institution, and is home to over 30,000 students.
Dental Surgery
The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) offered at MUCM is a 5-year programme that is divided into Phases 1 and 2 which are the Pre-Clinical subjects phase and the Clinical subjects phase respectively.
In Year 3 onwards at the start of the Clinical phase, you will begin spending more time training in the campus’s state-of-the-art facilities which include 3 Student Polyclinics with 51 dental units each as well as a well-equipped Prosthetic Laboratory.
On top of this, you will be posted to various partners including hospitals and dental centres to fulfil your modules in Hospital Dentistry, Community Dentistry, General Medicine and General Surgery amongst others.
You will join the institution’s over 10,000 alumni upon your graduation.

MUCM partners with many health centres and hospitals to enable its students to gain hands-on experience and rotational postings to complete their clinical skills training. Among the few hospitals medical students are posted to include Hospital Melaka and Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah (Muar)
