4 Reasons This Interior Architecture Course Is For Students Who Love To Work With Their Hands

Interior Architecture, Interior Design

One of First City University College’s (FCUC) popular courses is its Diploma in Interior Design and its BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design.

The main reason many of its alumni are very successful designers at established architecture firms today or have started their own interior design services is because of the rigorous hands-on approach of the curriculum.

1. Coursework Focused Assessment

The course is almost 100% coursework focused. Your grading comes from mini-projects throughout the course duration and a final year big project that will be assigned by your lecturer or in collaboration with an industry partner.

With the emphasis on continuous knowledge application, you will quickly draw connections between what you learn and how to apply them in designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but structurally sound.

Most of your time will be spent in the Wood and Metal Workshop, 3D Print Studio, and Laser Cutting and Engraving Studio. Various materials that you need for crafting your design structure can be found in the Materials Library Room.

2. The Curriculum Teaches, Develops And Tests Your Skills To The Limits

The curriculum builds your foundation by covering essential practical knowledge such as Building Material and Construction, Building Technology, Design Communication, Sustainable Design, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Project Management and Professional Practice.

Your application will be tested rigorously through projects that you have to complete every year using the knowledge you learnt from the abovementioned modules as the techniques advance. This means that the project themes and objectives will become more challenging in Year 2 and Year 3.

There are also electives you can choose in Year 2 which are Creative Entrepreneurship or Consumer Behaviour to equip you with the awareness to inject innovation into your future career or business.

Also, you know the education you are getting is high quality when the course is accredited by the Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM).

3. Close Collaborations With Industry Partners

Naturally, FCUC’s Faculty of Design and Built Environment works closely with many industry partners to give its students ample exposure opportunities to apply.

For example, a spray paint project collaboration with DPI Sdn Bhd that produces the Anchor Spray Paint line of products. Other projects involve mock outlet design for partners such as Dai Sou Kopitiam. Partners like King Koil Malaysia and Alpine Legacy are where the students incorporate furniture products as considerations in their interior architecture and design concepts.

Students also enter various competitions locally and internationally such as the Asian Young Design Awards, IDA Design Awards, and International Design Awards and have won gold and silver awards.

Award-winning designs by students.

You will also undergo a 6 months-long industrial placement with an interior design or architectural firm where you can showcase your skills and get a taste of the work standards of the real world.

The faculty has shared that most of the industry partner feedback has been positive and are impressed by the students’ abilities.

4. Experienced Lecturers Impart Real World Application

Obviously, you can’t get a real and earnest education without being guided by lecturers who have been there, done that.

The faculty is lead by a team of highly experienced academic team that held industry positions such as Head of Design Consultant and Creative Project Director. One lecturer runs his own interior design studio service and another senior lecturer even gave a TED Talk on design in the local surroundings and how design also serves functionality and the local community.

They are also members of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) and some members of LAM.

In competitions, the academic team also act as advisors for participating students to give them confidence and guidance towards success. One such success involved FCUC students bagging 3 awards at the MIID Students’ Saturday 2022 with the support of its 2 lecturers, IDr Fakhul Zaman Mohd Yusoff and Phil Su Sing Kwong.
