⚓ A Dean with a Unique Superpower
The tour kicked off in the campus library, where Angel met a man wearing a very distinctive uniform; Dato’ Professor Emeritus (UM) Dr Hashim Yaacob, the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry.
When asked what his number one superpower was, Dr Hashim shared an incredibly impressive resume. Not only is he a highly respected Dental Professor, but he was also the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya (UM) and currently serves as a Captain in the Royal Malaysian Navy! Having leadership with such vast, disciplined experience sets a standard of excellence for every student enrolled in the program.
🏥 Welcome to the Oral Health Centre
To see where the real learning happens, Dr Hashim directed Angel to the SEGi Oral Health Centre. Unlike a typical sterile medical ward, the hallways here are lined with bright, cheerful paintings designed to keep patients and students relaxed and happy.
Here, Angel was greeted by Dr Nabila Nadia Naharuddin, a Lecturer and General Dental Practitioner, who gave her a grand tour of the facility. The Oral Health Centre is a fully functioning, public-facing dental facility equipped with a massive 58 dental chairs spread across five specialised clinics!
🔬 Inside the 5 Specialised Clinics
When you study dentistry at SEGI University, you don’t just learn from textbooks. You get hands-on experience with real patients using top-of-the-line equipment. Dr Nabila broke down the different clinics where students hone their craft:
- The Primary Care Clinic (Clinic 1): This is where patients go for their routine dental checkups. It houses 11 dental chairs, 3 X-ray rooms, and highly advanced imaging technology, including CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) and OPG (Orthopantomogram) machines. These tools allow students to examine detailed 3D images of a patient’s mouth from the bone level all the way to the tooth crown, ensuring highly accurate diagnoses.
- Paediatric Dentistry (Clinic 2): A dedicated, welcoming space featuring 6 dental chairs specifically designed for treating children.
- Orthodontic Clinic: This 6-chair clinic focuses on alignment. Students learn to treat patients using traditional braces, retainers, mouth guards, and even the latest Invisalign technology (which utilises clear aligners instead of traditional metal brackets!).
- Minor Oral Surgery Clinic (Clinic 4): Equipped with 8 dental chairs, this is the surgical hub where students learn complex procedures, extractions, and minor oral surgeries.
- Dental Polyclinic 5: The grand finale of the tour! This is a massive, multi-disciplinary clinic where all types of advanced dental treatments are performed.
👩⚕️ Real-World Hands-On Training
One of the biggest advantages of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program at SEGI University is its massive emphasis on clinical exposure.
Inside Polyclinic 5, students from Year 3 onwards are given direct, hands-on dental training. By working directly alongside a professional in-house dental team and treating actual patients, students gain the real-world experience needed to graduate as confident, highly competent dental practitioners. 🏥 Real-World Hospital Placements

During Year 3 and Year 4 of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program, students are posted to two major government hospitals:
- Hospital Sungai Buloh
- Hospital Putrajaya
During these critical placements, students don’t just watch from the sidelines. They actively observe medical professionals at work, participate in ward rounds, and learn how to document complex dental and oral surgery cases properly.
🤖 The Dental Simulation Lab
How do students prepare before they are allowed to treat a real human patient? Dr Nabila playfully assured Angel, “Don’t worry, we don’t just hand our students a drill on day one!”
Instead, students spend countless hours perfecting their techniques in the state-of-the-art Dental Simulation Lab.
This massive facility is equipped with 31 individual simulator units. Each unit features a highly realistic “phantom head” where students can practice procedures like drilling cavities and using the air-water syringe to clean the teeth in a completely safe, controlled environment.
🦷 Mastering the Craft: The Prosthetic Lab
Another crucial part of the SEGI University Dentistry program takes place in the Prosthetic Lab. This specialised, well-lit lab is equipped with 56 individual prosthetic workstations.
Here, students focus on the intricate, hands-on artistry of dentistry. They learn how to meticulously carve teeth and create custom dentures and prosthetics from scratch, ensuring they have the technical skills needed to restore a patient’s smile.
