AIMST University is a non-profit private university in Malaysia which began operations in 2001. Its curriculum is based on that of the University of Bristol UK. AIMST is well known for its affordably priced medical and healthcare programmes but also offers essential studies in business, accounting, computing and engineering. 

The university was built by the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) to provide tertiary education, particularly to Malaysian Indian students. Since then it has flourished into an institution that accommodates students from all walks of life including international students. AIMST’s student population stands at about 3,000 currently.

AIMST is ranked #75 on the QS South East Asia University Ranking out of 148 Southeast Asia institutions that are ranked on the list. SEA alone has hundreds of universities that are not ranked on QS. It is also ranked #385 on the QS Asian University Rankings.

Location and Surrounding Vibe: AIMST campus is located near the town of Bedong and north of Sungai Petani, the capital city of Kedah. As can be seen in the aerial view of the entire 230-acre campus, it occupies an expansive greenery of land which makes way for all types of facilities that cater to learning, recreational, physical and mental needs. On‑campus student accommodation ranges from about RM500 to RM730 per month, including meals.

Being a healthcare-focused institution, there is an on-campus health clinic which is managed by the university’s doctors and is also used for students to gain exposure in dealing with patients.

Ease of Accessibility to Campus: The campus is a self-contained complex with amenities and conveniences that would allow you to live there without travelling out. Nevertheless, the town of Bedong is only a 10-minute drive while Sungai Petani is only 20 minutes away should you need to grab some supplies or experience what the city has to offer if you’re not a native Kedahan. There are also bus lines that stop near the university campus which students can take.

General Learning Facilities

The huge campus has many lecture halls, tutorial classrooms, libraries and various facilities that are fitted with the latest technology.

MBBS and Dental Surgery Facilities

The anatomy museum has over 200 displays of specimens, skeletons, artificial bones and various models and charts. There are 2 dissection halls that can fit over 100 students and an embalming room with real cadavers, cold chambers, and other facilities. There are 135 dental chairs, a dental technology lab and a dental simulation lab for students to practice.

Allied Health Science and Bioscience Facilities

AIMST also provides world-class facilities for its other healthcare courses such as nursing and physiotherapy. It also promotes biosciences and biotechnology courses that require the latest technology equipment to carry out ongoing researches.

The Clinical Skills Centre in particular comprise of emergency medicine, operating room, intensive care unit, O and G unit, pediatric care unit and others.

2.3 Recreational Facilities & Student Activities

There are many sports activities to choose from as the campus probably has the facilities for all your favourite games. You can find a basketball/netball court, a five-a-side football field, a futsal court, a gymnasium, an aerobics/yoga room, a 400-metre track, a tennis court, a squash room, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

There are about 20-30 clubs and associations to join, mostly academic, sports, music, cultural, religious, and community-themed.

2.5  AIMST University Student Hostel Accommodation

On-Campus: AIMST’s on-campus hostel accommodation is provided for all students. The hostel blocks are divided into male and female wings and are within walking distance to the campus and all amenities on the campus such as grocery shops, launderette, cafeteria, ATMs, printing shop, and an on-site mosque.

Room rates range from RM530 to RM730 per room, per month depending on configurations such as quad sharing, triple sharing or twin sharing and whether air-conditioning or without. 

What’s great is that AIMST’s accommodation package includes 3 meals a day at the cafeteria and laundry service 2 times a week!

Living Costs: General cost of living in Kedah, excluding accommodation, for students studying on-campus typically ranges between RM700 and RM1,000 per month. This would cover expenses like food, transportation, books, and miscellaneous personal expenses. Subject to individual lifestyle.

PTPTN Financial Aids

Malaysian students can apply for the National Higher Education Fund or PTPTN which is responsible for giving loans to students pursuing tertiary education. PTPTN falls under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education.

You can borrow from RM3,400 to a maximum RM50,000 per annum depending on the level and type of course you are taking. PTPTN only charges an annual interest rate of about 1%.

AIMST is well established as a destination for affordable medical studies. Its non-medical courses are also half the cost of the fees of institutions based in the main cities.

MBBS Course

The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at AIMST is modeled after major medical schools in the UK, and also incorporates local requirements by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

In the 5-year programme, your training at the Clinical Skills Centre and first clinical attachment happens as early as Year 2. Throughout the period of this course, termed as ‘’Junior Clerkship’’ you gain more advanced knowledge and skills. 

From Year 2 onwards you will also be required to work on Special Study Modules (SSM) which involve a research topic of interest, do a literature review and write a research paper in Year 2, Group Research using statistical evidence in Year 4 and Continuing Medical Education (CME) in Year 5 which enhances your research abilities.

In the final year, you will complete 5 weeks of elective posting at partner hospitals and quite a number choose to experience it overseas at reputed hospitals which include the ones in UK, Australia, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan and India.

MBBS students will also be a part of the R.E.D. Association which was created by the MBBS students who have been inspired by real encounters with underprivileged patients. Serving in this association ensures that student’s skills and attitudes are developed holistically such as empathy, entrepreneurship, teamwork and communication skills.

Dentistry Course

AIMST’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is equally as popular as the MBBS programme.

It comprises of a highly professional faculty with strong research base and has guided thousands of BDS graduates into the profession.

In Year 2 onwards, you start to dive into the subject matter of Dentistry covering clinical subjects like Conservative Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry and Applied Dental Materials, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Oral Radiology, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Pediatric Dentistry, Community Oral, Health Promotion & Preventive Dentistry and Law & Ethics.

Allied healthcare refers to healthcare professions that do not necessarily lead to a doctorate. AIMST offers other popular courses among students – Pharmacy studies, Nursing and Physiotherapy.
