1. Introduction

1.1 Background

Keele University (KEELE)’s estate entered history in AD 1180 as a gift from King Henry II of England. After the Sneyd family bought the land, Ralph Sneyd built the first Keele Hall as an event venue in 1580. Then, it became the University College of North Staffordshire in 1949 under Lord A D Lindsay, a former Oxford University Vice-Chancellor.

Fast forward to 1962, KEELE received its university status. Back then, the uni aimed to minimise branching out into specialised studies. Hence, most students in that period pursued subjects in arts, social sciences and natural sciences. Slowly, the curriculum evolved into what we know today.

And so, this is KEELE. The 1st new institution in the 20th century and now a Gold-rating recipient in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework.

Physiotherapy

Keele University’s Physiotherapy course is among the top in the UK. It ranked #10 in the Guardian University League Table, 2023, and #6 in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2025. Moreover, it is recognised by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the UK Health and Care Professional Council.

What brings it to the top?

KEELE’s Physiotherapy course dabbles in important aspects of physical rehabilitation. It covers human anatomy, neuropsychology, treatment and prevention. During your degree, you will also touch on subjects like

  • pharmacology
  • hydrotherapy
  • assistive technology
  • orthotics
  • neuropsychology

🔖Bonus Fact:

The Y4 curriculum comes with the option for specialising in

  • Neurological rehabilitation
  • Musculoskeletal rehabilitation
  • Cardiovascular and respiratory

The course also has practicals and over 1,350 hours of placement opportunities on campus. If you need real specimens to analyse, visit the Anatomy and Surgical Training Suite. It has frozen bodies and body parts. Otherwise, watch, learn, and practice with experts at the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Clinic. You can practice treating musculoskeletal injuries like joint sprains and backaches.

Plus, you study with other healthcare students, i.e. inter-professional learning (IPL). You may share the same classes and complete simulated exercises together. This environment becomes a practice ground for communication and teamwork. Just remember to keep that good posture while you are at it.

For newcomers, KEELE has mentors who will show you the ropes, such as

  • academic mentors (at the start of your course)
  • student mentors (In Y1)
  • practice educators (Clinical Placements)

Medicine Courses

Speaking of inter-professional learning, KEELE’s medicine course has a new place for medical and other healthcare students to learn together. In 2024, the University built a new simulation suite with

  • a hospital ward
  • a GP surgery
  • an operating theatre
  • A CT scanner
healthcare simulation at keele university

The new building is shared between Paramedic Science, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiography, pre-reg Occupational Therapy, and Medical students. Look forward to meeting new friends!

Another reason why we listed Medicine is for its well-designed curriculum. It strengthens your foundation in biomedical, behavioural and social sciences. Then, it gradually transitions you to more advanced topics like

  • women’s health
  • neurology
  • musculoskeletal systems

But, don’t worry. KEELE lecturers are experienced and always up-to-date. Over 200 teaching staff are still practising at the NHS. For example,

  • Dr Pensée Wu: A senior doctor at Royal Stoke University Hospital. She has brought over 500 crying babies to the world.
  • Kevin Armstrong: A West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic. He managed over 10,000 incidents!
  • Professor Jo Protheroe: A GP with 20 years of experience. She led her team to place students in over 100 Staffordshire and Shropshire GP surgeries.

Plus, Keele University incorporates early clinical experiences! During the first 2 years of your studies, you get to work with community services and general practices. From Y3 until Y5, the general practice will host 20% of the teachings. That can sum up to over 100 weeks of practicums in Staffordshire, Shropshire, and adjoining counties.

If you plan to become a doctor in Malaysia, this Medicine course is recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

🔖Bonus Fact:

An Intercalation allows you to take a year off to explore a subject area. It awards extra qualifications to your studies and there are several approaches to it. For example, you can study at the bachelor’s level after Y2 or master’s level after Y4.

Neuroscience with Psychology

What if…you could study the human brain and psychology while running an experiment? KEELE’s neuropsychology course kills these 2 birds with 1 stone.

Your degree will dig into the brain’s biology and the inner workings affecting behaviours. As you dive deeper, you will also look into external factors affecting the brain, such as drugs and injuries. In Y2 and Y3, you can also opt for modules that interest you. Among them are

  • Brain Disease
  • Regeneration and Repair in the Nervous System
  • Psychosocial Engineering
  • Illness and Coping

Previously, students used their Final Year Project (FYP) to research

  • Sleep and mental health
  • Experiences of disabled students in Higher Education
  • Detecting deception in others

Also, KEELE has various projects for students to attempt during their studies. They can be done over a 6-month work placement, summer research assistantship, and as an experiment

Being a 2-in-1 course, it connects you with Neuroscience and Psychological tools to test different brain functions. As such, you may often visit the Central Science Laboratories (CSL) and the Psychology labs. They have

  • EEG equipment to measure brain activities
  • light microscope for neuroanatomy studies
  • eye-tracking software to understand cognitive processes
  • VR headsets for controlled lab studies of large-scale human exploratory behaviours
