Q: Why did you choose to study Biotechnology at Monash University Malaysia?
Suhaib: For me, Monash was a very easy option! I chose it because the university offers a wide variety of units that helped me develop highly specific skills while teaching me a lot of in-depth theory. Through this program, I learned fascinating things like genetic manipulation and how to design the related components.
Another huge factor was the equipment. Monash University Malaysia simply has better facilities compared to other universities. The labs are incredibly well-equipped, and there are certain high-tech machines here that you just cannot find anywhere else in the country!

Q: What inspires you to want to make an impact on the world with Biotechnology?
Suhaib: With the growing issues of climate change and an ever-increasing global population, there is a massive, urgent need for enhanced food production and better healthcare.
I want to use my degree to contribute to these areas. I’m hoping to either enter the agricultural industry to help produce better, more resilient crops for Malaysia or go into the medical industry to research newer, more effective ways to address current diseases and global health issues.
Q: Bonus Question! What kind of industrial experience or internships did you get to do during your studies?
Suhaib: Interestingly, I didn’t actually do a traditional internship! Instead, I opted to do a hands-on science project in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM).
My supervisor at Monash had connections with FRIM, which gave me the amazing opportunity to do cataloguing work with fireflies! The researchers at FRIM had already caught the fireflies and labelled the specimens with the species and location. My job was to inspect the specimens closely, take down the data, put it into an Excel sheet, and describe the fireflies based on their gender and species. It was a really unique way to apply my science skills!
