2. Student Life Review & Living Cost

2.1 UTP Campus Review

Lewis Hamilton in the house! Checking out the UTP Campus!

Location and Surrounding Vibe: The UTP Campus in Perak is an architectural masterpiece, designed by world renowned Foster and Partners, shaped like a five-pointed star made up of five semicircles. The design received an Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007.

It is a modern yet academic complex that displays a beautiful library space, the Chancellor Hall, plenty of contemporarily designed lecture theatres and edu-tech enabled classrooms. A total amount of 7.3MWp solar panels were installed on its building rooftop as part of the university’s vision to champion sustainable technology practices. It puts its money where its mouth is.

Ease of Accessibility to Campus: The campus is built on a 1,000-acre area in the new township of Seri Iskandar, Perak, Malaysia. It is accessible to major roads and is a 40-minute drive to Ipoh city centre or take the train from Batu Gajah station just 5 minutes from the campus.

2.2 Learning Resources

Being ranked high on the QS World University Ranking list is no accident. That comes with world-class facilities and a large campus space like that of UTP.

Learning facilities include a marvellously designed library with over 200,000 book titles and 17 online databases, a 2,000-capacity grand Chancellor Hall, various academic blocks dedicated to each faculty, 164 teaching labs, and 50 research labs divided across the engineering and science courses.

Research Centres

As highlighted in the introduction earlier, UTP maintains research institutes for 6 areas of focus:

  • Institutes of Self-Sustainable Building
  • Institutes of Health & Analytics for Personalised Care
  • Institutes of Autonomous System for Autonomous Facilities
  • Institutes of Contaminant Management for Oil and Gas
  • Institutes of Hydrocarbon Recovery for Enhanced Oil Recovery
  • Institutes of Transport Infrastructure for Smart Mobility

These institutes are housed in a dedicated building entirely for research purposes!

There is much effort and emphasis given to the R&D capabilities of the institution. Why? Because it is literally generating revenue in the millions for the university through collaborations with the telecommunication industry to mobilize Internet-of-Things solutions, autonomous structural health monitoring systems for offshore facilities and even a Hajj Chatbot application.

And good news for students! There are opportunities for students to be a part of these R&D projects under the 6 pillars through the Research Attachment Programme.

A sneak peek inside the R&D building.

For students who make the cut, you will

  • Be attached for at least 8 weeks at the UTP research centre.
  • Experience a global research-based internship with prominent researchers.
  • Have access to world-class research facilities.
  • Receive a transcript upon completion of the programme.
