Study Food Science At Monash University Malaysia

Study Food Science At Monash University Malaysia | Degree Unboxing

Have you ever wished you had a superpower? What if your superpower were the ability to make food healthier, last longer, and retain all of its vital nutrients? While that might sound like the job of a nutritionist, it is actually the fascinating realm of a Food Scientist!

Recently, Uni Enrol’s host Angel met up with Dr Thoo Yin Yin, the Program Director of Food Science & Technology, to explore the incredible Monash University Malaysia campus and see exactly what it takes to study food science in Malaysia.

If you are curious about the science behind what we eat, let’s unbox this mouth-watering degree at Jalan Lagoon Selatan, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Not Your Average Kitchen. The tour kicks off in the Food Science Kitchen. If you think students are just in there cooking up a storm, think again! This is where culinary arts meet hard science. During the visit, students were busy experimenting and formulating a diabetic-friendly mandarin sorbet using real mandarin oranges and monkfruit extract. It is all about finding innovative ways to create healthier food alternatives without sacrificing a drop of taste.

The Pink-Lit Food Sensory Lab. Next up is the ultra-cool Food Sensory Lab. Bathed in pink light, this facility features private booths where new products undergo blind consumer acceptance tests. Evaluators are served mysterious samples through small sliding doors to assess key attributes such as flavour, mouthfeel, and overall acceptance. It is the ultimate, highly scientific taste test!

Monash-Industry Plant Oils Research Laboratory (MIPO) is dedicated to oil and fats research.

Reverse Engineering Our Favourite Snacks. For those looking into the top-tier Monash University Malaysia Food Science course, the curriculum is basically like reverse engineering the things we eat! Dr Thoo explains that the perfect student for this food science course in Malaysia isn’t necessarily someone who loves to cook. Instead, it is someone who is deeply curious about the science behind flavour, texture, and ingredients.

A major highlight of the program is the Final Year Project, where students must create innovative, sustainable, and market-ready products before they graduate. A shining example showcased on the tour was “Okhana”—a brilliant plant-based nugget developed using soy milk and tofu by-products. This student-made innovation was so impressive that it won the “Most Marketable” award at a 2022 international product development competition in Singapore!

Graduates go on to monitor and ensure the sustainability of food production processes for major multinational companies like Nestle, MacFood, Coca-Cola, and Mondelez, as well as global packaging giants like Tetra Pak.

To top it all off, Monash University Malaysia stands in a league of its own. It is the first and only private university in Malaysia to receive the highly coveted IUFoST accreditation—a strict global benchmark for educational standards in Food Science and Technology.

From high-tech laboratory equipment to inventing the next big plant-based snack, this degree is packed with delicious surprises. If you want a future-proof career that blends science, innovation, and global impact, choosing to study food science in Malaysia at the beautiful Monash University Malaysia campus might just be your perfect recipe for success!
